Action Alert: Help Stop SB266 Before It’s Too Late
The fight for affordable energy and a livable climate in North Carolina is coming to a head — and your voice is urgently needed.
Today state lawmakers could vote to override Governor Stein’s veto of Senate Bill 266 — a dangerous piece of legislation that would let Duke Energy:
- Charge customers upfront for expensive, polluting new methane gas and nuclear plants — even if they’re never completed.
- Avoid the clean energy transition by weakening the law that requires them to cut carbon pollution.
- Drive up our monthly energy bills by $28 to $34 per household over time, according to a recent NC State University report.
The bill is also estimated to cause a loss of over 50,000 jobs due to a decline in power sector investments.
We must stop this bill. But two key Democratic lawmakers representing Mecklenburg County — Rep. Nasif Majeed and Rep. Carla Cunningham — voted for it, and could vote to override the veto.
We wondered why, and in our research discovered that both of them have received multiple, large donations from Duke Energy over the past five years.
And now an industry front group that launched a Facebook page three days after this bill was introduced by former Senator Newton – Duke Energy’s North Carolina president until 2015 – is specifically targeting Democrats who voted with Republicans to pass the measure, likely aiming to maintain the members’ support ahead of the override vote.
So they need to hear from you now.
Tell them: Stand with the people of North Carolina — not Duke Energy’s profits. Sustain the Governor’s veto.
