Standing With Charlotte’s Immigrant Community
Reports that federal agents may begin operations in Charlotte as soon as this weekend have created understandable fear and uncertainty in many of our neighborhoods. We want our immigrant neighbors and their families to know that Sustain Charlotte sees you, values you, and stands with you.
Equity has always been central to our work. Our mission has long included inspiring decisions that lead to greater equity because we believe every person deserves safety, opportunity, and dignity. That includes the thousands of immigrants who help make Charlotte the vibrant, resilient, and welcoming community we love.
We are all part of one human family. Differences in skin color, language, or the side of a political border we were born on do not change that. Every one of us wants the same basic things. We want to raise our families in peace. We want to live without fear. We want a fair chance to build a healthy and prosperous life.
When any member of our community is targeted, threatened, or denied due process, the entire city feels that harm. Our safety and our future are bound together. Turning a blind eye makes us all less safe and undermines the principles that hold our democracy together.
We call on all Charlotte residents to support and protect their immigrant neighbors. Check on your friends and coworkers. Speak up if you see mistreatment. Offer help when you can. We also urge our local, state, and federal elected leaders to use every resource available to defend the rights and well-being of immigrant families.
Sustain Charlotte is committed to standing in solidarity with our immigrant community through this moment and beyond. Our community is strongest when we stand together.
