375 people explored FreeMoreWest on foot at our 2018 #WalkCLT event!
More than 375 Charlotte area residents enjoyed exploring the FreeMoreWest business district, surrounding neighborhoods, and greenway as they participated in the third annual #WalkCLT powered by OrthoCarolina!
This fun, family-friendly event invited residents and visitors to walk, rather than drive to destinations in their area by taking a map-guided twilight stroll. Following check-in at Recover Brands, participants were invited to explore special activities and deals at nearby destinations including Enderly Coffee, Town Brewing, Rhino Market & Deli, Charlotte Fencing Academy, American Burger Company, Pinky’s Westside Grill, Crossfit QC, Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center, Can Do! Signs, KeenDog Training, and an after party at Blue Blaze Brewing!
Despite some unexpected rain that rolled in around 6:15, almost everyone remained in high spirits. Dogs, babies, children of all ages, and even whole families on bicycles joined the event! We calculated some really exciting outcomes of the event:
1,262 total miles walked!
126,200 calories burned!
1,388 lbs carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) emissions prevented by walking instead of driving!
Transportation is the largest single source of air pollution in the United States. Short trips (less than 3 miles) contribute disproportionately more to air pollution because of cold engine starts. By introducing people to the ease of walking instead of driving to nearby destinations for dinner, shopping, or recreation, #WalkCLT supports sustainable choices that will keep Charlotte’s air healthier for everyone.
#WalkCLT not only introduced people to a more sustainable way of traveling in an area they may not have explored before on foot. It also offered an opportunity to enjoy a fun activity with family and friends while getting exercise!
In a follow-up survey, more than 50 #WalkCLT participants shared what they enjoyed most:
“I just moved here and keep meaning to get acquainted with the walking areas and keep not doing it. The event was great for me.”
“Seeing my coworkers discover how nice the greenway is and just how close it is to our uptown office.”
“Learning about the local businesses I didn’t notice by car. So many pleasant discoveries.”
“The walk itself and discovery of such a gem of a neighborhood.”
