City identifies unique and common goals for neighborhoods
The City of Charlotte is actively engaged in a comprehensive Community Area Planning (CAP) initiative, a strategic undertaking designed to address the distinct needs and aspirations of its diverse geographies. This process recognizes each community’s inherent uniqueness while also identifying common objectives that underpin the city’s overall development framework.
At Monday’s Transportation, Planning and Development Committee meeting (video here), city planning staff shared an update on the CAP process. The slide below lists key dates for action by City Council including a public comment opportunity on April 28 and a vote by Council on May 27.
The various geographies of Charlotte have goals that are common to all, as well as goals unique to each geography, based on their needs. The Community Area Plans include guidance about creating complete communities based on unique characteristics like mobility needs, open space, and placemaking.
The appendix includes a neighborhood toolkit. It outlines about 50 City programs and is meant to be a “one-stop shop” for residents interested in improving their neighborhoods.
Plans are implemented in various ways and by various participants. The planning department is focused on redevelopment and capital improvements, but change also occurs through public-private partnerships and alignment rezonings.
How to get involved:
On April 28th, the Community Area Planning effort will undergo a Council action review and public comment period. Register to speak and share your thoughts!
