Comments to Charlotte City Council Before June 22 Red Light Camera Vote

On June 22, Sustain Charlotte's Meg Fencil delivered the following remarks during the Charlotte City Council meeting.

Good evening Mayor, Council Members, and staff.

My name is Meg Fencil. I am speaking on behalf of Sustain Charlotte. I also serve as co-chair of Charlotte's Vision Zero Task Force.

Tonight, I want to begin by remembering the people who have lost their lives on Charlotte's streets so far this year, between January 1st and June 14th.

These are not statistics. They were neighbors, family members, friends, coworkers, and loved ones.

I’d now like to pause for a moment of silence for us all to remember these individuals. These neighbors of us all.

We urge you to implement the red light camera pilot immediately rather than waiting until 2027 as currently proposed.  Because every week matters.  Because every week we lose at least one more neighbor to traffic violence.  And every week, someone loses someone they love.
