Introducing Charlotte’s Mobility+ Website

The City of Charlotte’s Mobility+ hub is a central portal that outlines Charlotte’s ambitious strategy to build a safe, reliable, and connected mobility system that supports growth, accessibility, and equity. Aligned with the Strategic Mobility Plan adopted in June 2022, it emphasizes a balanced multimodal mode share—aiming for 50% of commutes to occur via walking, biking, transit, or carpooling.

On the Mobility+ site you can explore:

  • The rationale: Charlotte’s rapid growth is outpacing infrastructure, causing more congestion and reduced accessibility unless we act.

  • The implementation pathway: how Charlotte plans to fund transformative projects, including sidewalks, bike lanes, safer intersections, new bus routes, light and commuter rail, and street lighting—across roads and transit.

  • Strategic Investment Areas (SIAs): the city has identified 22 key local zones where coordinated, place‑based investments will be piloted. Two areas—Far East‑Harrisburg and Arrowood—have $55 million in bond funds allocated to deliver improvements through 2027 with the goal of scaling all 22 SIAs at greater speed and impact.

  • Resources & FAQs, including details about the proposed one‑cent sales tax referendum, what it covers, how much it would raise, and estimated household impact—on average about $19/month (~$223/year) vs. over $1,000/month to own a car.

Why Sustain Charlotte Supports the Proposed One‑Cent Mobility Sales Tax

Addressing Equity and Accessibility

Sustain Charlotte has long advocated for equitable investment in transportation that reaches all residents—not only drivers. Our region’s growth has outpaced infrastructure, leaving low‑income households, seniors, youth, and people without cars with fewer safe and affordable options to reach jobs, healthcare, and essential services.

Strategic Funding for Proven Priorities

The proposed tax is expected to generate approximately $19–$25 billion over 30 years by combining local sales tax revenue. Sustain Charlotte supports this because it provides a reliable, long‑term funding mechanism aligned with Charlotte’s Strategic Mobility Blueprint and Capital Investment Plan—making it possible to fund Complete Streets, transit modernization, and an expanded rail network.

Local Control and Transparent Allocation

Draft legislation calls for a new regional transit authority and a 27‑member oversight board to ensure that 40% of funds go to roads, 40% to rail projects, and 20% to buses—across Charlotte and the six surrounding towns in Mecklenburg County. This ensures regional coordination, accountability, and compliance with local priorities.

Momentum and Timeliness

Municipal leadership—including Charlotte City Council, Mecklenburg County, and neighboring towns—have now endorsed the plan and urged the draft bill’s introduction to the NC General Assembly, with hopes of putting a referendum on the ballot as early as November 2025 . Sustain Charlotte views 2025 as our best opportunity yet to secure legislative approval and voter support.

Why This Matters for Charlotte residents

By supporting the one‑cent sales tax:

  • We’ll fund critical Complete Streets that make walking and biking safer across neighborhoods.

  • We’ll expand bus and rail service, reducing wait times and increasing access to jobs and services county‑wide.

  • We’ll invest in pedestrian infrastructure, improving public health and multimodal options.

  • We’ll bring economic, environmental, and equity gains, including reduced congestion and cleaner air.

Mobility+ is Charlotte’s digital front door explaining how the City plans to build a more accessible, sustainable multimodal transportation network through data‑driven investments. Sustain Charlotte supports the proposed county‑wide one‑cent mobility sales tax because it provides ambitious—but realistic—funding for transit, roads, walking, biking, and safety upgrades that benefit everyone in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

We invite residents to explore the Mobility+ site for more details, and to join us in advocating for a smarter, more equitable transportation future for our city.
