Mecklenburg transit plan moves forward, includes shortened Silver Line and bus upgrades (Charlotte Business Journal)

The Metropolitan Transit Commission on Wednesday voted in favor of a plan to build additional light-rail lines and overhaul the bus system. The move sets the stage for a proposed 1-cent sales tax referendum as soon as November to fund the projects over the next 30 years.

Sustain Charlotte, a local nonprofit dedicated to transportation and growth policies that prioritize environmental and economic fairness, praised the MTC’s decision.

“It addresses today’s most pressing concerns — traffic congestion, unsafe streets, and limited mobility options — while laying the foundation for a healthier, more connected, and more sustainable region for decades to come,” Sustain Charlotte said in a statement released after the vote. “The plan serves all areas of Mecklenburg County, across many modes of transportation, and creates opportunities for all taxpayers to benefit.”
