Mecklenburg County leaders support sales tax increase to fund Red Line project (WBTV)
Mecklenburg County leaders approved a resolution Tuesday night that supports a one-cent sales tax increase to pay for the Red Line commuter train, which would connect Uptown to Davidson.
The decision was not unanimous, and followed what was at times contentious discussion.
Six county commissioners, Charlotte city leaders and the majority of Mecklenburg County town mayors have all backed the resolution. Their approval is the first step to getting the tax increase on the November 2025 ballot.
“The legislation is not perfect,” Hope Wright of nonprofit Sustain Charlotte said. “However, it is a major and long-awaited step toward securing a much-needed and significant source of funding to invest in our transportation system – a step we believe must be taken now.”
