New 30X30 plan suggested after Vision Zero shortfalls (WBTV)

WBTV reports that the City of Charlotte has introduced a plan to reduce traffic-related fatalities by 30% by 2030. This is a stepping-stone goal toward meeting Vision Zero, a movement Charlotte joined in 2018 that is an action plan to reduce crashes and eliminate traffic-related deaths and injuries by 2030. Seven years in and five years from 2030, we’re not currently on track. Over the past five years, there have been an average of 145 traffic-related deaths and injuries.

“The city has done a lot to make our streets safer,” said Meg Fencil, Sustain Charlotte’s director of engagement and impact. “They’ve put a lot of investments into things like mid-block crossings, intersection safety measures, and our bike network. It’s just not happening at as fast a rate as we need to keep up with our existing population, let alone the growing population. If we want a commitment to Vision Zero, we need a plan to get there. Having an interim goal to make sure we’re on track to reach the timebound goal that is both ambitious and realistic is a smart way to get there.
