Press Release: Sustain Charlotte Applauds MTC Vote to Adopt New Regional Transit Plan

Charlotte Area Transit System
Sustain Charlotte commends the Metropolitan Transit Commission for its vote tonight to adopt an updated regional transit system plan that reflects the needs, voices, and hopes of Mecklenburg County residents. This plan is a win for every corner of our community.
At its core, this is a plan for all of us. It addresses today’s most pressing concerns—traffic congestion, unsafe streets, and limited mobility options—while laying the foundation for a healthier, more connected, and more sustainable region for decades to come. The plan serves all areas of Mecklenburg County, across many modes of transportation, and creates opportunities for all taxpayers to benefit.
From an economic perspective, improved transit will boost our local economy, support businesses, and expand access to jobs. From a health standpoint, it will encourage more active living and reduce air pollution. Environmentally, it moves us toward cleaner air and lower carbon emissions. And in terms of equity, it prioritizes access for residents in historically underserved neighborhoods, ensuring that transit works for everyone—not just those who drive.
“This plan is truly a win-win for our entire community,” said Shannon Binns, Executive Director of Sustain Charlotte. “It brings immediate improvements for today’s riders while preparing us for the demands of tomorrow. It’s a plan that listens to the public, reflects our shared values, and gives all Mecklenburg County residents better, safer, and more affordable ways to get around. There are no losers here—only winners.”
We extend our sincere thanks to the MTC members for their leadership and commitment, and to the thousands of residents who shaped this vision with their feedback. Together, we’re building a brighter transportation future.
