Supporters speak up for Park and Recreation funding
On Wednesday, January 22, Sustain Charlotte's Meg Fencil spoke at Mecklenburg County Commissioners' public meeting in support of funding for Park and Recreation.
Funding decisions made over the next few months will determine how much land can be purchased for future parks and greenways, how quickly new parks, greenways, nature preserves, and rec centers can be built, and how consistently the existing facilities can be maintained.
Read Meg's comments:
Good evening, Commissioners. On behalf of Sustain Charlotte, we urge you to prioritize and fully fund our county's parks and greenways system in this year's operating budget and the rolling CIP.
Investing in our parks, greenways, rec centers, and nature preserves is not just about creating beautiful places to enjoy – it's about building a healthier, more equitable, and more prosperous community for all Mecklenburg County residents and visitors.
- Equity and Inclusion: Access to quality green spaces should not be a luxury. We must ensure that all residents, regardless of income or location, have equitable access to parks and greenways.
- Community Connectivity: As greenway segments become connected to each other and to on-road bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, they have the power to connect people and communities. We are increasingly seeing more residents using the greenways to commute to work, and children biking or walking to school.
- Health Benefits: Parks and greenways offer vital opportunities for physical activity, reducing the incidence and severity of chronic diseases. Access to nature improves mental health, reduces stress, and fosters a sense of community.
- Environmental Benefits: Green spaces play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, improve air quality, and help regulate temperatures. Well-designed greenways protect our water resources by preventing erosion and filtering pollutants, while also allowing residents to fall in love with and better steward the natural environment.
- Economic Growth: Parks and greenways are economic drivers. They attract tourists, boost property values, and support local businesses. They also create jobs in construction, maintenance, and recreation.
Fully funding our parks and greenways system is an investment in a healthy, connected future for Mecklenburg County. It's an investment we cannot afford to miss.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
