Sustain Charlotte: Local Decisions Should Not Be Driven by Political Threats

CHARLOTTE (July 16, 2026) – Last night’s announcement that the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) will revisit its previous vote to rescind support for the I-77 South toll lane proposal is disappointing — and deeply concerning.

Representative government depends on local elected officials exercising their independent judgment on behalf of the people they serve. Decisions should be based on the merits of an issue and the interests of the communities they represent—not on threats of retaliation from higher levels of government.

The people of Mecklenburg County have spoken loudly and clearly. Local governments across the county, along with the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, have expressed their opposition to the I-77 South toll lane proposal. Those decisions reflected the concerns of the communities they represent.

When state officials change the law and use threats to pressure local leaders to reverse duly considered decisions, it raises concerns that extend beyond transportation policy. It speaks to whether local governments can exercise the independent judgment voters elected them to provide.

If CRTPO holds another vote in September as announced by Chair Richardson last night, we hope every board member will cast their vote based on what they believe is best for the people they represent—not because they fear political or financial consequences for reaching a different conclusion.

The integrity of local decision-making is fundamental to a healthy democracy.
