Boingo Graphics + Clean Air Carolina featured at our March mixer
How did a partnership between Sustain Charlotte and Charlotte-based printing company Boingo Graphics help to keep 30,000 picture frames out of the landfill? Boingo’s Executive Vice President Linda Kirby ended her presentation to last night’s mixer attendees by telling that story.

Boingo Graphics is a Gold Partner and Sponsor of the 2015 Sustain Charlotte Awards + Earth Day Celebration. Boingo operates from a 24,000 square foot facility and employs 33 people full-time at that location. Over the years Boingo has switched to chemicals that are water soluble, bio-degradable, and recyclable. They’ve implemented programs to reduce power consumption and usage of all raw materials. Boingo’s customers are encouraged to order and proof on-line, which saves gasoline, paper as well as other resources. Boingo’s wide format flatbed printing uses UV Cucrable inks that do not release toxins to the air like solvent based inks would.
They continue to invest in printers and technology that minimizes environmental impact. Boingo buys Renewable Energy Credits and carbon offsets for the electricity they utilize in their business operations because they believe investments in wind power are paving the way for a better future while offsetting the company’s carbon footprint. Linda closed her presentation by sharing an impactful example of partnership at work for the greater good:
“We had a customer that ended a project leaving 30,000 plastic and glass picture frames, an entire warehouse full, headed for a landfill. Not wanting to be a part of that, we looked at every other option. We even allowed the client leeway in paying storage fees while we researched alternatives. Thankfully, after a referral from Sustain Charlotte, Goodwill came to our rescue. Now these frames are not taking up space in a landfill. Instead, they are benefiting the community by being 100% re-purposed and sold in their retail stores.”
We then heard from Ernie McLaney of Clean Air Carolina. He provided an overview of the organization’s mission to “ensure cleaner air quality for all North Carolinians through education and advocacy and by working with our partners to reduce sources of pollution”.
