Dozens of leaders honored at Sustain Charlotte Awards celebration

Against the stunning backdrop of the LaCa Projects Gallery in Uptown, Sustain Charlotte welcomed over 300 guests to celebrate the achievements of dozens of sustainability leaders based in the Charlotte region.

Awards were given to winning organizations in the categories of Energy, Food, Land Use, Equity + Empowerment, Sustainable Economy, Transportation, Waste Reduction, and Water. Click here to learn more about the work of the winners and all of our nominees!

This year’s winning organizations are:

West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition (Food Award)
Town of Davidson (Land Use Award)
Free Range Brewing (Sustainable Economy Award)
Trips for Kids Charlotte/Charlotte Re-Cyclery (Transportation Award)
Leaf Burrito (Waste Reduction Award)
The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and College of Arts & Architecture (Water Award)

Our judges bestowed this year’s highly coveted Outstanding Sustainability Leader Award on Sam Perkins, the Catawba Riverkeeper.  Sam’s passion for protecting our waterways from a wide variety of threats is so inspirational!

Sustain Charlotte’s Founder and Executive Director, Shannon Binns, challenged every attendee to make sustainable choices and remember to honor those who work behind the scenes to make Charlotte an incredible place for current and future generations. He spoke about Sustain Charlotte’s work in partnership with neighborhoods to make local streets safe and inviting for bicycling, walking, and riding public transit.

Shannon Binns inspired audience members to be sustainability leaders within their communities.

Guests enjoyed nine incredible courses of appetizers donated by our Food Sponsor, Roots. The Farm at Dover Vineyards provided wine for the event, and Legion Brewing donated craft beer.

Josh Daniel entertained guests with lively tunes. Photographer Sean Busher captured the crowd’s enthusiasm for sustainability through photos and video.

Four lucky winners won raffle prize packages with values ranging from $782 to $2,388 each.

And new this year, auctioneer Murray McCandless excited guests, while raising funds for Sustain Charlotte, by auctioning off four amazing items LIVE from the stage!
