Sustain Charlotte asks Charlotte City Council to support funding for Cross-Charlotte Trail

We’re thrilled to see that Charlotte’s City Manager has included full funding for the Cross-Charlotte Trail in his proposed FY20 budget. Below is the letter we sent to the City Council on May 7 (the day after the manager’s budget was made public) in support of the proposed funding allocation.

Dear Council Members,

I just wanted to take a moment of your time to express Sustain Charlotte’s strong support for the manager’s proposal to fund the construction of the planned and designed segments of the Cross-Charlotte Trail (1-9) and the planning and design for segments 10 and 11.

As you know, and as evidenced by the thousands of Charlotteans who participated in the Open Streets events sponsored by the City each spring and fall, more opportunities to safely bike and walk for recreation and transportation are a very high priority to nearly every Charlottean.

This investment will pay tremendous dividends to both current and future generations of Charlotteans.  It is an investment that benefits our health, our wealth, our equity, and our environment.  It will also connect neighborhoods and facilitate more connections between residents from different areas of our city — helping better integrate our city and build a greater sense of community.

Thanks for your service, and please do not hesitate to contact me regarding this or other transportation and planning matters.
