County Commissioners Approve Putting Transportation Referendum on November’s Ballot
This week, Mecklenburg County commissioners approved putting the transportation referendum on November’s ballot.
This measure would fund $20 billion in transportation projects across our county, including expanded light rail, enhanced bus service, and road improvements for all users.
We’re encouraged and excited by this development. As our region welcomes 157 new residents daily, improving mobility options for all road users is crucial for safety and sustainability.
We’re especially excited about the potential rail and light rail expansions that could transform how we get around Charlotte.
Below are remarks Sustain Charlotte Urban Design Specialist shared at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Good evening, Commissioners,
My name is Eric Zaverl, and I serve as Urban Design Specialist with Sustain Charlotte.
For 15 years, our organization has been actively working to increase mobility and transportation options in the county, as our long-term vision is a city and region where transportation options reduce environmental impact, increase opportunities for all, and enhance quality of life.
Tonight, your vote has the power to move us from planning to action.
With the General Assembly’s recent passage of House Bill 948, the next step is yours: placing the regional transportation plan on the November ballot and giving Mecklenburg County voters the right to decide whether this investment in our shared future is worth making.
Your vote tonight isn’t for or against the plan—it’s a vote to let the public weigh in—a vote to trust our residents with a choice.
The plan would deliver a 50% increase in bus service and nearly 43 miles of new rail, connecting people to jobs, healthcare, education, and opportunity. The ultimate decision should rest with the people who live and work in this county.
We urge you to vote yes tonight—not just to support equity, sustainability, and regional mobility, but to respect the democratic process.
Let the people decide.
Thank you for your time, your leadership, and for giving Mecklenburg County voters the opportunity to say Yes FOR Meck this November.
Thanks for reading!
