CDOT and Sustain Charlotte partner on Vision Zero event
Last year, 21 people were hit and killed while walking in Charlotte, and 2 people lost their lives while riding their bicycles. In the Queen City (and across the country), the statistics are sobering. How can each of us work to reduce those numbers to zero?
On August 11th, Sustain Charlotte hosted Grow Smart CLT: Let’s End Traffic Deaths in Charlotte! to address this question.
With Charlotte DOT’s staff Angela Berry and Alfred Oyoyo, we discussed ways that all of us can help to achieve the City’s goal of having ZERO people killed (or seriously injured) in traffic crashes by the year 2030.
The event included time for audience Q&A, and we shared some practical ways that you can begin taking action to make Charlotte’s streets safer for walking, biking, and riding public transit.

Ways to take action:
- Take the Vision Zero pledge and invite your family members to take it.
- Review CDOT’s Vision Zero page and share information with people you know.
- Commit to using the word “crash” not “accident”.
- Share #VisionZeroCLT messages on social media
- Request a Vision Zero presentation for your neighborhood or community group by emailing [email protected] or calling (704) 432-5259.
- Learn more about the Charlotte Regional Transportation Coalition and email our coalition coordinator Tarik at [email protected] to discuss how you can get involved.
