Action Alert UPDATE:

Another local hurdle has been cleared! On Tuesday night, the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution supporting the draft sales tax for transportation legislation, with 6 commissioners in favor and 3 against. We spoke in favor of the resolution. Watch the video replay below.
The discussion largely revolved around what we do and do not know about the potential tax. Several commissioners expressed concern that the legislation would lock us into a funding plan that has not been thoroughly vetted by elected officials and the public. However, others on the board pointed out that this resolution is simply to show the North Carolina General Assembly that the region wants to have the option to hold a sales tax referendum. Without authority from the General Assembly, the public won't even have the choice to vote on a sales tax. If passed, a large and thorough public engagement process will begin to create an updated, fiscally constrained transit plan so the public will know exactly what they are voting for when it appears on their ballot, likely in November 2025.
We wholeheartedly agree with Commissioner Altman: "This is the largest infusion of infrastructure this community has ever had and may ever see again...we have to seize this moment." Thank you, commissioners, for moving this forward.

Recent Action Alert UPDATE: On Tuesday, September 3, Charlotte City Council voted 10-1 to purchase the Red Line tracks from Norfolk Southern and approve a resolution supporting the draft sales tax legislation! The region has been working toward these votes for decades, making their approval truly historic. Thank you to everyone who emailed their elected officials and spoke directly to City Council before the votes. Together, we are one step closer to healthy, equitable, safe transportation choices for all.
